Mee Fong Wong Gee

Our beloved mother, Mee Fong Wong Gee, passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 7, 2023 at the age of 91.    

 Born on April 27, 1931 in Canton, China to Tong S. Wong (father) and Lai Ying Yee Wong (mother), she is pre-deceased by her husband, Mon Jang (Tommy) Gee; and her sister, Mee Jing Wong Siu (husband Yee Keung Siu, deceased); and is survived by her children, Sue Gee Shem (Billy Shem), Wendell Gee, Walter Gee, Stephanie Gee Joe (Wellington Joe); her grandchildren, Jeffrey Shem, Jason Shem (DeeDee Chang and daughter Addy), Brian Shem, Aldo Leyva, Oneydi Leyva (son Jackson Ring), Taylor Gee, Paige Gee, Ryan Joe, David Joe; her brothers Raymond Wong (Margaret), Roland Wong; her sister Betty Wong Haglund (John); 10 nieces and nephews and 13 grandnieces and grandnephews.   

She was a devoted spouse and a loving mother.  The role she cherished, loved the most and was most proud of was her role as grandmother.   

She grew up in China where she attended the Chinese Ladies Auxillary School.  After moving to Hong Kong, marrying her beloved husband on March 4, 1955 and having their first child, she followed her husband to the United States in 1960  to start their new life in Houston,  Texas.  They started their own grocery business and worked hard and tirelessly 7 days per week to support their family of 4.  Across a span of over 25 years, she and her husband managed 3 grocery stores – Dowling Food Center and Charles Food Market, both in Third Ward and Gee’s Food Center off I-10.  Once retired from the grocery business, she lovingly and proudly helped to take care of her grandchildren.   

She loved flowers, cooking, sewing, gardening, reading Chinese newspapers and watching Chinese opera.  

She will always be in our hearts and her memory will never fade.
